Sober Living vs. Residential Recovery: What's the Difference?

If you're comparing options for early recovery, two terms come up again and again: sober living and residential recovery. They sound similar, but the difference matters — and choosing the right one can shape whether the first months of sobriety hold.

A sober-living home is, at its simplest, a substance-free place to live. Residents come and go, hold jobs, and are expected to stay clean, but the structure is light — often just a curfew and a drug test. For someone with a solid foundation already under them, that freedom is exactly right.

Residential recovery, like Fern House, is more hands-on. Alongside a substance-free home, there's a daily rhythm of meetings, accountability, house responsibilities, and staff who know each resident by name. That structure is the point: early sobriety is fragile, and routine carries a man through the days willpower alone can't.

Neither is "better" in the abstract — they serve different stages. But for a man newly out of detox or treatment, or coming off a relapse, the structure and brotherhood of a residential program is often what makes the difference. If you're not sure which fits, call us; we'll talk it through honestly, even if the answer is somewhere else.
