Staying Sober Through the Holidays

Staying Sober Through the Holidays

For most people the holidays mean celebration. For someone in recovery, they can mean a minefield — parties built around alcohol, old family tensions, grief, and long stretches of unstructured time. A little planning goes a long way toward getting through them sober.

Have a plan before you walk in. Know your exit, bring your own drink, and give yourself full permission to leave early. Line up a call you can make the moment things feel shaky — a sponsor, a friend, a brother from the house who understands.

Lean harder on your supports, not less. Keep going to meetings even when the calendar is crowded; the weeks people most want to skip them are often the weeks they matter most. Structure is protective, and the holidays are exactly when it tends to slip.

And be gentle with yourself. The holidays can stir up loss and memory that have nothing to do with a drink. Feeling it is part of healing. If the season is hard, you're not failing — you're human, and you don't have to get through it alone.
